We can hear!

Any breed of dog can have congenital deafness (present at birth), and breeds with white pigmentation are most affected. There is a test known as the brainstem auditory evoked response or simply BAER, which detects electrical activity in the cochlea (ear) and the auditory pathways in the brain. This test is performed around 6 weeks of age in dogs and can determine if a dog can hear in both ears (bilateral), one ear (unilateral) or if the dog is deaf. Statistically about 8% of dalmatians will test deaf, about 22% will be "Uni's", and 70 % will hear in both ears.

Yankee Dals is happy to report all eight puppies in this litter can hear bilaterally! For dalmatian breeders, hearing test day is stressful. The worry of what the test results may be, make for a very long day. While we felt fairly confident the puppies could "hear" in some manner, we are very excited about the results, and relieved we have made it over this very important hurdle in our puppy's lives.

I do want to stress if you are considering a dalmatian, make sure your puppy has been hearing tested. If you are offered the opportunity to live with a dal that is a uni (only hearing in one ear) - take it! We have had a uni in our life before, and they compensate very well for the deficit.

While there are many avenues available for hearing testing to be done, we are fortunate to live not far from the University of California at Davis where there is a school of veterinary medicine and hearing testing is offered. They even make house calls!

Hear are some pictures on the NYC kids going through the hearing tests.

The Curiosity Period

Weeks 5 to 7 are termed the curiosity period. Puppies have the lowest fear and the highest acceptance during this time. Although we have added many new situations for the pups over the past few weeks, we are busy now to keep their days stimulating. We are lucky at the timing for this litter, as the weather in California has allowed for fun filled days outside the house. Running water through a hose, sprinklers, baby pools, and wagons have added to their days this week. I have made a wobble board, which is useful for beginning agility training, but I think any dog-especially puppies can benefit from. I have a small diameter board cut into a circle which I have attached a small metal bowl to the center of one side. When placed on the lawn, bowl side down, the board will wobble as a puppy steps up onto it. All the puppies are enjoying the board and some have gotten very good at playing king of the hill and maintaining their balance as litter mates bounce around them. Here are some pictures of the group playing outside, between 5-6 weeks.

Love me like my dog does

This past week in Tulsa Oklahoma was the annual Dalmatian Club of America Nationals. For those unfamiliar to dog shows, a National is much like a convention. Numerous days of showing dogs, good food, good friends, beautiful dalmatians, and lots of fun. This year, the Nationals were billed as the Native Dalmatian. Although I am not sure who to give credit to for this video slide show, they have done an awesome job capturing the dalmatian personality. Hope you enjoy this video as much as I did.
